Unitized Curtain wall

Updated: Aug 7, 2020

The Unitized curtain wall system is an external building facade, usually aluminum-framed wall, containing in-fills of glass, aluminum spandrel panels, to External walls.

The framing is attached to the building structure and does not carry the floor or roof loads of the building.

The wind and gravity loads of the curtain wall system are transferred to the building structure, typically at the floor line.

Pros :

+ Factory-assembled frames - Fast & lower field installation costs.

+ Quality control within an interior climate-controlled environment.

Cons :

+ Need for regular maintenance.

+ To keep out moisture and wind, a sealant must be applied to the perimeter, and this sealant must be replaced every 10 years.

+ Curtain walls utilizing the stick system - More time required to install them.

+ Greater costs for shipping and storage.
